Green and white signs give information about directions and distances. Guide signs on expressways show you which lanes to use to get where you want to go.
When you see this sign, do not drive onto the street or ramp in the direction you are heading. The road or street ahead is for one-way traffic traveling in the opposite direction.
If a vehicle approaches you head on in your lane, slow down and pull to the right. Sound your horn to alert the other driver.
If you swerve left and the other driver corrects at the last instant, you will still crash.
The speed limit on roads near schools is 20 mph. This can be posted in various ways. Speed limit signs may have flashing yellow lights or be posted for certain hours of the day. Look closely for signs saying you are approaching or entering a school zone.

Divided highway ends. The divided highway on which you are traveling ends 350 to 500 feet ahead. You will then be on a roadway with two-way traffic. Keep to the right.
Headed downhill with no curb, turn the wheels to the right or side of the road, so the car will roll away from the center of the road if the brakes fail.
Remember, when you park on a hill, the general rule is to turn your wheels sharply toward the side of the road or curb. This way, if your vehicle starts to roll downhill, it will roll away from traffic. However, when headed uphill at a curb, you should turn the front wheels in the opposite direction, away from the curb and towards the road. Then, let your vehicle roll backwards until the back of your front wheel touches the curb. The curb will stop your car from rolling into traffic.
If the solid yellow line is closer to you, you cannot cross the lines. If the broken line is closer to you, you can only cross the line to pass another vehicle when it is safe to do so.
Large vehicles make wide turns, and sometimes they must move to the left before making a wide turn to the right. If you are next to a truck or bus, you are probably in a blind spot. Watch for possible right-hand turns and stay safely behind until you know what the driver is doing.
Four-way stop intersections can cause confusion. Try to make eye contact with the drivers of other vehicles to judge their intentions and avoid accidents.
Keep good vision in front and around your vehicle. Always look ahead of and around you and check your mirrors often. Stay alert and prepared for the unexpected.
Be aware of road conditions and possible hazards in front, to the sides, and behind you. Look far ahead so you have enough time to brake and stop safely.
You must be at least 16 years old to apply for a Class D or Class M learner’s permit. A permit gives you permission to drive while you practice your driving skills and prepare for your road test. A permit is valid for two years.
Check to see if anyone is injured. Give aid, if possible. Call the police and request an ambulance or EMTs, if necessary.
It is illegal to wear a radio headset or any headphones while driving. If you are 18 or older, you can use one earplug for use with a cell phone.
Circular intersection ahead. This sign indicates that you are approaching a roundabout or circular intersection.
To reduce the effects of glare from oncoming headlights, do not look straight at headlights. Look to the lower right side of your lane.
Completing the Driver Retraining course does not remove offenses or surcharges from your driving record. It also does not replace any other requirements.
Avoid highway hypnosis. If you have been driving for a long time and feel tired, you should get off the highway at the next exit, rest stop, or service area. When driving far, stop and take regular breaks every two hours or every 100 miles.
Never drive if you are sleepy or drowsy.
Stop sign ahead. When you come to this sign, slow down to be ready to stop at the stop sign.
You must stop. It is the law. It does not matter which side of the road you are traveling on.
If the school bus is on the other side of a divided highway with a barrier between travel directions, you do not need to stop.
A steady yellow circle means caution; the traffic signal changes from green to red. Remember, you must stop if it is safe. If you are already stopped at an intersection or a stop line, you may not proceed. If you are inside the intersection when the yellow light comes on, do not stop but continue through the intersection.
When possible, take potential hazards one at a time. If you do not have enough room to pass safely, wait for oncoming traffic to pass or for the lane to get wider. Remember to leave a lot of room between your vehicle and riders.

The passing score in Massachusetts is 72 percent, which is lower than many other states . But it doesn’t mean that the test is easy.
You’ll need to answer 18 questions correctly within the allotted 25 minutes. The allotted time is usually more than enough to pass the examination.
If you have a cognitive or physical disability that prevents you from finishing a test within 25 minutes, you may request an alternative test with extended time.
There may also be an opportunity to ask for a paper or person-to-person oral exam.
When you practice with these sample tests, it is a good idea to aim higher than 18 correct answers, and it is best if you stay at it until you reach a score of 100 percent on each test.
That way, you can feel confident that you will pass the examination.

When you apply for your first license, you must always start with a MA learner’s permit, regardless of age.
If your suspension period is two years or more, you must take a complete exam (learner’s permit exam and road test) to reinstate your suspended/revoked learner’s permit or driver’s license.
Even if your suspension period is less than two years, an RMV hearings officer may decide that you must take both the knowledge exam and the road test again.
If you let your license expire for more than a year, RMV will ask you to retake all tests.
You must take all tests if you hold an expired license from Canada, Mexico, or the US Territories and that license expired more than a year ago.
Suppose the license is valid or expired less than a year ago. In that case, you must provide a certified driving record (30 days old or less) from the country or territory. You must also have a valid immigration status for at least 12 months. In such a case, RMV waives the knowledge and road tests.
If you have a valid license from another country, RMV will require you to take all tests.

Applicants with a valid license from any other state, District of Columbia, U.S. territory, Canada, or Mexico can transfer their driver’s license to a Massachusetts license without taking the test.
Their license must be valid or expired less than a year ago.
All RMV branches offer computer-based testing stations.

RMV will then inform you to bring required documents and completed application to a RMV Service Center .

If you fail the online test at home, you will get instructions on paying for it and taking a new test online at the end of the exam.
If you fail the test at a service center, you can also re-test the same day, but these tests may be subject to availability.
If you want to visit the service center, you should make an appointment. You can make it online if you like.
As mentioned, online tests and tests at a service center have a time limit. You have 25 minutes to complete the test. If you feel that 25 minutes isn’t enough, you can rest assured that 25 minutes is usually more than enough. Most test takers finish the test in less than 15 minutes.
Remember, if an examiner catches you cheating on an exam, you must wait for 60 days before you can take a re-test. In severe cases of cheating, you may be subject to further investigation and denied a driver’s license or learner’s permit.
Manuals or other reference materials are not allowed in the testing area at a service center or when taking the test at home.
Focus on learning everything you need to pass the exam. It is easy; you will feel better and be a safer driver.
Even if the passing score on the MA test is among the lowest in the country, the test is challenging, so you must prepare well.

If you pass the knowledge test, your score is valid for six months, and you must complete your road test within these six months.
With the learner’s permit, you can start practicing driving. When you practice driving, you must always carry your learner’s permit.
You must always be accompanied by a licensed driver at least 21 when you are behind the wheel. Your supervising driver must also have at least one year of driving experience and sit beside you.
If you are under 18, you may only drive between midnight and 5:00 a.m. if the supervising driver is your parent or legal guardian.
After six months and at least 40 hours of supervised driving (30 hours if you completed a driver skills development program), you are ready for your intermediate license, the Massachusetts Junior Operator License (JOL)
